Paper with a Twist: Coveris Launches Lightweight Paper Innovation

European packaging manufacturer Coveris introduces MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist, a paper alternative for confectionery packaging.

Coveris has introduced an innovative paper solution that replaces less sustainable alternatives commonly used for twist-wrapped confectionery products, including lollipops, candies and chocolate pralines, as well as heat-sealable flowpack packaging for bars and sticks. Designed to meet industry 95/5 paper recyclability guidelines, the lightweight material provides reliable product protection and efficiency on high-speed packaging lines.

In 2026, confectionery manufacturers will be faced with the complex task of reconciling recyclability, material performance and legal requirements. Regulatory drivers such as the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR), Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and country-specific packaging taxes make sustainability mandatory instead of optional. In concrete terms, this means, for example, that paper packaging must contain a maximum of five percent non-paper components in order to be considered recyclable. Brands are therefore increasingly relying on solutions that are recyclable, can be seamlessly integrated into existing recycling systems and cause fewer CO₂ emissions.

“MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist supports this change by helping brands reduce plastic content without compromising on product protection and packaging efficiency. By finding the most ecologically and functionally compelling solution for each application, we enable our customers to balance regulatory requirements, cost and performance and consistently align their packaging with their sustainability goals,” said Melinda Bonamour, Business Development Manager Paper Consumer & Healthcare at Coveris.

Meeting recycling targets and ensuring product protection, Coveris’ new solution consists of a single layer of lightweight functional paper and provides a reliable seal as primary packaging for single or double rolled candies, chocolate pralines and lollipops, as well as for chocolate bars heat-sealed in flow-bags. It also offers excellent printability for gravure, flexographic and digital printing. Switching to this paper structure does not require major changes to existing machines and can be efficiently implemented on high-speed and standard FFS packaging lines.

MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist also meets the stricter recycling requirements for packaging waste. This is a crucial factor in the confectionery sector, where material performance and recyclability must be carefully balanced. The PPWR introduces stricter recyclability requirements as well as higher recycling targets. For example, it stipulates that all packaging placed on the market must be recyclable by 2030.
